Greg Benz Artist Statement
Through the use of non-traditional painting implements, I actively apply acrylic media to layer textures on canvas, glass or other materials. Unique marks are crafted by using energetic motions combined with various tools. The movement of the strokes is liberating as the paint is applied, resulting in an abstract composition, which is comprised of multiple colours that interact with each other. Each addition effects the rhythm of the arrangement, until harmony has been achieved, with each element maintaining its autonomy in a unified configuration. The intent is to create a balanced piece of non-representational artwork.
Currently, canvas & wood have become the major support for my abstract compositions which layers of upon layers of mixed media textures and paint is applied. The canvas is used as a framework allowing the marks to play within limits of the composition. As the layers recede into the background the eye follows through the depths and absorbs the arrangement. Black is used primarily alongside various shades of colour that contrast each other in order to assist the illusion of depth.
Future work will encompass these techniques in order to further the understanding of balance and rhythm within the boundaries of a fixed medium.
